I can't afford to live in Brighton.
I'm one pay cheque away from becoming homeless. We can't afford higher rents.
I want a safe roof over my head. I spend half my income on rent.
There's a housing crisis in Brighton & Hove. The housing shortage, particularly in social housing, has meant street homelessness has doubled in the past year. People are being priced out of the city, the fabric of the Brighton & Hove is changing and we need more affordable homes if we are to stop this.
Yet against this backdrop developers are consistently failing to meet the council's own target of providing 40% affordable housing in new housing developments (with affordable housing still costing up to 80% of market rent). And the council is complicit in this - accepting £1.2 million from developer Crest Nicholson to build luxury flats with no affordable housing at all. We have to ask the council: for the sake of our city, where's the 40%?
