Brighton & Hove Liberal Democrats hosted a booksale on Saturday 4th March to celebrate International Women's Day. The sale featured books written by or about inspirational women and was held at the Chapel Royal, North Street, Brighton. More than a hundred books were sold, raising almost £200 for local charity RISE, which does outstanding work to support victims of domestic abuse. Book sale sandwich board

Commenting on the sale, Carrie Hynds, Lib Dem prospective parliamentary candidate for Hove said: "This book sale was a great opportunity to celebrate the strength and diversity of women's voices. In my day job, I work as an editor and proofreader. Great progress has been made in the publishing industry since the Brontë sisters had to adopt male pseudonyms to be taken seriously, but there is still work to be done to achieve full gender equality. It's fantastic to be able to support the work of RISE and introduce a fair number of people to their new favourite writer at the same time."

A spokesperson for RISE added: "RISE would like to extend our wholehearted thanks to the Brighton & Hove Liberal Democrats for their fantastic book sale that raised valuable funds for our work.

The money raised will make an enormous difference to people in Brighton and Sussex affected by domestic abuse; we run the only local domestic abuse helpline, have a refuge space for women and families in urgent need and also work in schools teaching children about healthy relationships to prevent the next generation from repeating the pattern.

Thank you as well to every single person who bought a book on Saturday! To give you an idea of the life-changing support you have helped us to offer, here's some feedback from one of our service users: "RISE has not only saved my life at a time when I felt suicidal, alone and unable to cope, it has helped me start to rebuild it as a happy life. Thank you.""
